AHA! An opt-in List? To get your business really humming along you’ve finally realized that you must have a good opt in list. So you’ve read countless articles and looked for expert advice and have read many success stories about these “gurus” who have created a small fortune with opt in lists. AND… you’re still having trouble getting a list. So you go through all your information again and now you think you’ve got it and know everything there is to know about opt-in lists. So you followed all the advice you’ve gathered and followed it to a "T" and still you aren’t getting anywhere.

Why can others succeed where you failed? The most common mistake is that you CHARGED straight in.
You chose a topic that you think would be quite popular and would earn you money and that people would be just frothing at the mouth to opt-in and get your newsletter or buy your product.

1) Make sure you get your customers to trust you & your products first. Simply launching your opt-in list sign-up page doesn’t make you an expert and a believable seller. Join forums to gain valuable knowledge and insight about your customers. Find out their wants and needs and then target those wants and needs.
Join forums from other sites as well. Provide expert advice and recommendations. When you feel that you have built up some trust, that’s when you’ll be able to start your own opt-in list. You can also build a base with other forum users. Ask them to join your list. Friends are always good customers. Put up a link to your site so they can check it out and see what you're business is all about.
TRUST! You’ll only earn the bucks when the consumers and subscribers believe and trust in you. They want a product or service that will be a good exchange for their money. If they don’t know you, they certainly aren’t going to buy just because you recommend it.
2) Find a product or service that people want and need. Although it may not be your favorite subject or area, if you provide a service and product that you have researched and learned very well, then you can go forward from there. Make sure you invest your time, effort and money in something that you can sell as well as something that buyers or subscribers of your opt in list can use.
It is true that its best to sell something that you have interest in, but if there aren’t many people that have the same interest as you then obviously it won’t be profitable. Do your research well and you’ll see the profits come in. Make sure that you also provide your subscribers with promotional material that they can actually use and spread around to help your site become even more popular.
3) Make friends with other opt-in list users. This can be very beneficial if it’s someone who has already launched a successful opt-in list. The experience of a successful list builder is invaluable and especially if this new found friend will share his experience and ideas with you. Experience is still the best teacher. As you found out, there are many articles available for you on the Internet that you can use, but there is nothing like getting a first hand account from someone you trust.
Experienced opt-in list users will be able to tell you what to do and what not to do because they have gone through it. While different situations occur for different people, the general concept can still be very helpful. There are many things to avoid and these successful people will be able to tell you which ones.
